Brian Guffey and I have spent the last two days driving through sage brush, glassing water holes and staking our Double Bull blinds in strategic locations. The ranch I hunt in South Dakota has some unbelievable antelope running around on it, and yesterday while scouting proved that this year the trophy potential is better than ever! During the day we saw more than a dozen P&Y class bucks, along with two other bucks that were absolute smokers! I also got lucky and burnt some of the best antelope footage I have ever shot!!!! I can't wait for everyone to see it!
It's never easy when you're hunting mature animals of any species, and this hunt is proving to be no exception. When hunting the Pronghorn in early season the time-tested technique is find a well-used water hole, erect a blind and then grind it out. Usually in the western US, August and September are hot and dry, so water-hole hunting is very effective. Until two weeks ago here in western South Dakota, it had been in the 100 degree range and so dry that the few water holes the rancher has, were slowly disappearing, and then it rained... In the last two weeks they have recieved over three inches of rain, and we got rain again last night. This means that all of the little pot holes across the sun-baked prairie are now water-filled, and the "goats" don't have to hit a water hole to tank up for the day!
The last two years we have been done with everybody in just two days, however this year I think everybody had better pack an extra amount of patience in their duffle! To take a goat on this hunt could take more than just one day. But at least all of my hunters will know the construction of a Double Bull blind inside and out! (No pun intended)
I'm confident we will have a great hunt because the guys that booked with me this year are all hardcore! I'm sure they will all be able to handle the 15 hour days in a Double Bull! Be sure to check back in to see the results of the hunt.
We will be SLAMMIN'!
